5 Tips for choosing the right e-bike for you
April 26 2022,
If you have never experienced an electric bike (or e-bike) before, you are in for a treat. Some say riding an e-bike for the first time is like a superhero discovering their power for the first time. The exhilaration that comes with each rotation of the pedals is like nothing else. You are doing the work, but the bike’s electric motor is giving each motion an extra kick, pushing you forward with smooth, fluid power.
E-bikes are the bicycles of the future, available today and their popularity is soaring. If you are looking to purchase your first e-bike, however, things can get a bit tricky. You are stepping into a new world, after all, and for all the fuss about e-bikes in recent years, there are very few experts out there that seem to be able to help newcomers understand the industry. If the world of electric bikes is one big blur but you are set on putting one in your garage this summer, we can help.
Our team is here to guide you towards the perfect e-bike for you and your needs. As a starting point, check out these 5 tips that can help new e-bike buyers find their way in the maze of models, batteries, and watts.
- Figure out the type of e-bike you want
Like traditional bikes, e-bikes break down into mountain and road categories based on where they are designed to be used. There are multiple subcategories, but the starting point is determining where you plan to use your e-bike. If you plan to use it mostly on paved paths in the city, a road e-bike is the best option. If you want to have the option to go a little further off the beaten path, a mountain e-bike is the way to go.
- Understand e-bike classes
There are three classes of e-bikes described below:
- Class 1: Pedal-assist only with a maximum speed of 32 km/h
- Class 2: Throttle-assist with a maximum speed of 32 km/h
- Class 3: Pedal-assist only with a maximum speed of 45 km/h
Pedal assistance means that the electric motor only kicks in when you are pedaling, and the e-bike can’t be moved on the motor’s power only. Throttle assistance means the bike can move on the motor’s power alone.
Most e-bike users start with Class 1 and for many, that is as far as they will go especially considering the third point.
- Understand regulations governing e-bikes
Ontario was one of the last provinces to legalize electric bikes and the province has strict rules around e-bike usage and the types of e-bikes that can be used.
These include:
- A maximum weight of 55 kgs
- Must be capable of being used without the electric motor and have pedals
- Cannot go above 32 km/h
The last point is very important. Ultimately, it means that Class 3 e-bikes are not allowed to be used in Ontario. That’s why most users will go with Class 1 e-bikes.
- Consider range and charging time
Your e-bikes range and its battery’s charging time is more important that how much the e-bike costs. You can save a bit by going with a more affordable e-bike, but if it has limited range than you will not get as much enjoyment out of it as you should.
Aim for an e-bike with over 30 kilometres of range or more, and make sure that the charging time is as low as possible. This will allow you to head out for long adventures and get the most out of your e-bike.
